Welcome to the Point Loma Optimist Club

The Point Loma Optimist Club has been a pillar of the Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Loma Portal and Midway District communities for over 70 years. Since 1954, we have been dedicated to supporting the youth of our community by providing annual support to schools and organizations that promote excellence in athletics, music, and academics. Additionally, we have been a steadfast supporter of the Ryan Family YMCA (formerly known as the Peninsula YMCA) since its inception. Our contributions have helped improve the lives of countless young people in our community.

Supporting our Peninsula Youth

As a community-based organization, we take pride in supporting the youth of the Peninsula area of San Diego. Our efforts have benefited a diverse range of organizations, including schools such as Point Loma High School, Dewey Elementary, Cabrillo Elementary, Correia Middle School, and Ocean Beach Elementary, as well as Sacred Hearts Academy and the YMCA Capital Campaign fund. We also support local youth sports teams, like Little League. Our contributions have helped many Point Loma High School seniors finance their college educations through our Optimist scholarships. We are always open to supporting new youth-oriented groups in the area and regularly organize events to benefit the young people in our community.

Our Flag Program

Since July 4, 1964, the Point Loma Optimists have dedicated themselves to honoring our nation's heroes by displaying American flags along a two-mile stretch of Rosecrans Street. This street, located in the heart of Point Loma, is near Liberty Station and serves as a major route to the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery and the Cabrillo National Monument. Every Sunday and federal holiday, our specially designed vehicle sets out 168 flags in tribute. In addition, we also honor U.S. Navy submariners on their return from overseas deployments. This tradition has been a source of pride for our organization and for the Point Loma community for over 60 years.
